Mentors

**Please Note** The following information relating to the Mentor role will not be relevant to all students coming to our trust. Those that have moved across to the Future Nurse Standards (NMC, 2018), requiring Assessors and Supervisors, will no longer require Mentors or Sign-Off Mentors. These roles will be phased out in the coming months / year.

Mentors

A mentor should have achieved a recognised qualification to be a mentor (and to be a sign off mentor to have undertaken additional criteria).

Within the nursing profession, a mentor is accountable to the NMC to ensure that the student is ‘Fit to Practice’.

Mentors must undertake a yearly update. Over the three years one must be a group update. The other can be either face to face or e-learning (if applicable).

However, every three years must have a triennial review in which they need to have facilitated at least 2 students in order to remain on the mentor register.

The mentor is also accountable to the trust or organisation that they are employed by, and must adhere to any local policy and national policy.
